BREEDERS OF HEALTHIER BULLDOGS

FAQ

What, Where, When, How, Why?

There are no answers, only questions.

What is the Suffolk Bulldog?

The Suffolk Bulldog is a new breed created by Daniel R Garnham of Suffolk Bullbreeds. After considerable research, The Suffolk Bulldog was produced by breeding for health from a wide gene pool of health checked bulldogs and related breeds. The goals of the breeding program were simple though achieving them has taken some considerable time and effort. The Suffolk Bulldog is simply a healthier version of the British bulldog, with similar temperament, height and weight. Our Suffolk Bulldogs breathe freely through a short but functional muzzle. have improved movement due to improved body structure and do not suffer from the skin, eye and urinary tract infections that plague many British bulldogs.

Why are your dogs healthier?

The Suffolk Bulldog is healthier for many reasons. Intelligent breeding and careful breed selection has certainly played a significant part. Some similar breeding programs have failed due to breeders becoming impatient. We excepted that we were not going to eradicate the health issues of the British bulldog overnight, therefore the Suffolk Bulldog would take a long time to create. We also excepted from the beginning that, 'line=breeding' was out of the question. The reason for not line-breeding is that health problems bred out in the early stages of the program would begin to return. We continue to breed bulldogs from scratch to produce new Suffolk Bulldogs to continually widen the gene pool from which our dogs are bred. Dogs bred from a wide gene pool have stronger immune systems than purebred dogs so they do not tend to suffer the skin, eye and urinary tract infections that plague some dogs and cost owners a fortune in frequent vet bills not covered by pet insurance.

What is Line=breeding?

Line=breeding is controlled in=breeding. This means Uncle to Neice. Father to daughter. Grand=father to Grand=daughter. Etc Etc... It gets worse. Brother to Sister!! Line-Breeding is the reason why most purebred dogs in the U.K have at least one and often several inherant health issues firmly set in their genetic make=up. The Suffolk Bulldog is not line=bred. The breeder, site owner and Suffolk Bullbreeds do not advocate Line=breeding or in=breeding.

What is the breed standard for the Suffolk Bulldog?

The Suffolk Bulldog is between 14-18" to the shoulder at a bodyweight of 45-75lbs, though most of our bulldogs are 15=16" tall at 55-65lbs. The Suffolk Bulldog is broad and powerfully built with heavy bone mass. The dog should move easily  without movement being inhibited by being overly muscled or structurally unsound. The head should be large the skull broad and though brachyceaphalic should not be muzzless or overly short in the muzzle. The desired muzzle is short but functional allowing free breathing and a strong bite. Shoulders and chest should be broad and well muscled, the front end strong and powerful with short strong heavy boned front legs and large paws. Rib cage should be broad and cylindrical while the waist is narrow and clearly defined. Hips and back end should be broad powerful and well muscled but not overly so. When viewed from above the dog should be front loaded and slightly torpedo shaped. Chest and shoulders should be significantly wider than hips and back end. The joints should be strong robust and well positioned allowing ease of movement. The dog should trot not waddle, running and jumping with ease. The dogs skin should be relatively tight while the muscle mass, though significant and pronounced should not be exagerated so as to inhibit movement. The dog should remain a fit healthy functional bulldog and should continue to be bred with these goals in mind. Tail should be screw, crank, short straight or pump handle. Tails are never docked. Temperament should be confident and loyal though non=aggressive. All colours including brindles and pieds are exceptable though, blacks, blues, chocolates and tri=coloureds are particularly desireable. Goals at the beginning of the breeding program were to initially lay the foundations on which to build a structurally sound, free moving, free breathing, fit, intelligent bulldog with a superior immune system. Consequently the Suffolk Bulldog has an improved quality of life increased life span and vastly improved overall health. The Suffolk Bulldog was created by Daniel R Garnham of Suffolk Bullbreeds. The Garnham family are the only breeders of the Suffolk Bulldog.

What is the difference between an Olde Tyme or Olde English Bulldogge and K.C bulldog or Victorian Bulldog?

A K.C bulldog is a small to medium size dog weighing around 50=55lbs with a placid nature and minimal exercise requirements. though easy to own in terms of their miniscule exercise requirements, to prevent infection their skin folds need regular cleaning and screw tails regular wiping. Many are closely bred from a very small gene pool and consequently the breed has many health issues and a very short average lifespan, around 5 years apparently. Though some health problems are as a direct result of poor body structure, show breeding has created a structurally poor dog by encouraging exageration of the bulldogs most extreme features. This form over function approach combined with extreme and prolonged,'line=breeding' has also significantly weakened the bulldogs immune system. Skin, eye and urinary tract infections plague the bulldog and cause the breed much discomfort and the owner significant expense. Some breeding programs seek to re=create a dog similar to the bulldogs produced around 1850 from the initial programs of cross=breeding the original working bull-baiting dog with the pug and French 'sour mug'. This 'Victorian' Bulldog was a much healthier and significantly different bulldog than that which we know today.
